Today, 12/12/12, is World Hoop Day. Not sure what that is?
Every year on an international, easy-to-remember date World Hoop Day
volunteers invite their communities to share in the vision of creating a
more peaceful world through play and giving back. Goals of World Hoop
Day’s annual event are to recruit new hoopers through teaching lessons
of hoop making and dance, sharing of music, food, games and laughter,
and raising funds to distribute hoops to as many individuals in the
world as possible.
I'm hoping to build a hooping community in my hometown, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. My goal is to have an event next year for World Hoop Day!
Happy Hooping!

December Dungeon Hooping
With the cold weather upon us, I'm limited to where I can hoop...the basement is now my studio.
Here's a video of me messing around. Warning...I'm not professional. I think I'm about 4 months into hoop dance. The biggest difference between last month and this month is I have started to document myself more to learn moves and such, plus I have started to use music during my practice. This has been wonderful and energizing! And holy cow, is choreography super hard!
So, I will leave the fancy dance planning to the professionals and as I said, this is just me messing around. I'll post a more serious attempt soon. Enjoy and I hope you get a laugh...I had a great time in the dungeon tonight.
Music: Queen: I'm in love with my car
My dancing really doesn't do the song justice...please don't sue me Queen or Roger Taylor.

Hoop Dance Styles
Hoop Dancing can take on so many forms. I thought I'd like to highlight some different styles of hoop dance just to demonstrate how versatile this art form can be.
Ballet Inspired Hoop Dance
Burlesque Hoop Dance
Off Body / Isolations / Modern
Circus / Contortion
Belly Dance
Trick Based / On Location
Gymnastic
Steampunk / Modern
Multi Hooping
LED Hoop Dancing
Fire Hooping
Partner Hooping
Native Hoop Dance
Dancing with a hoop can lead to other forms of flow arts like ariel hoop or lyra, manipulation, poi, staff and I'm sure a bunch of other art forms I'm not aware of.
There is a video of a very cool chick doing a modern hoop dance in an empty swimming pool...and I can't find it online for the life of me...I'll keep looking!

Progression and Encouragement
And now here's the next day.
You might not see much difference, but I do:) More smooth, real pop going on and my confidence is improved as a result of documenting these little practice runs.
Sunfire Inspired hooping
Shakti Sunfire is the hooper who inspired me...she has such a wonderful flow and philosophy for life and hooping.
Excuse my mess in the kitchen.

November hooping
My playbook is getting finicky on me...so as a result I couldn't add a video directly...this link will show my...November hoop update
And a few days later...More backyard fun
It was cold that day but I was desperate to get out and hoop with no ceiling or walls to confine me.

Hoop Journey
Here is a video I made for my friend Rosalie documenting my hooping progress. I estimate less than 2 months practice.
I was working on a trick called the horizontal duck out and after a few tries I threw in a jump through at the end for fun.
I've been encouraged by a youtube hooper to post videos...it's motivating and documenting my hoop journey just reinforces how much fun and rewarding hooping is.
While this is a new hobby, I feel like it's where I should be right now...a small, unique community where encouragement, support and motivation are underlying values and the sheer joy of nailing a trick...it's a process that is quite addictive!
More videos to come
